Returning expatriates
Whatever your reasons for repatriating into your home country there are a number of things that you should consider prior to doing do. In the same way that you needed to carefully plan your move abroad you should also prepare in advance for your move back home. While you will have familiarity with your home country and probably a strong network of friends and family, there are still some key areas that will need your consideration.
One area that repatriating expats find challenging when they return home concerns establishing a financial foothold. If all ties with the home country have previously been severed it can be very difficult to arrange any type of credit or mortgage upon your return. Again, it is crucial that you do as much research as possible before you return home so that you are prepared for any difficulties you may face.
Gil Levy is the principle of Gilsons Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers
Gil spent the majority of his professional life as a tax partner with the international accounting firm Pannell Kerr Forster (now merged with BDO in Sydney) and the U.S. based accounting firm Arthur Andersen where he was the head of the Private Client Group in the Sydney Tax division. Following the merger of Arthur Andersen (then known as Andersen) with Ernst and Young in 2002, Gil started the Sydney Branch of the accounting firm MGI Melbourne to provide specialist tax consulting services to their Sydney and offshore based clients and to continue to provide those services to ex Andersen clients.
In 2008 MGI Sydney became independent from Melbourne and in 2012 Gil retired from MGI and set up Gilsons, operating out of the MGI offices in Sydney.
